Bamberg is known for its historic old town. It became UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and attracts countless tourists to the city every year. Many of the buildings in the city center of Bamberg have a medieval core, but the facades sparkle with the splendor of Baroque.
The reason for this is Bamberg's economic boom towards the end of the 17th century and the enthusiasm of the Bamberg Prince Bishops Lothar Franz von Schönborn (1693-1729) and Friedrich Carl von Schönborn (1729-1746) for baroque architecture. They shaped the current cityscape of Bamberg with impressive new buildings and pushed Bamberg citizens to redesign and rebuild through tax relief for builders and the supply of low cost building materials.
