Bamberg Cathedral

Bamberger Cathedral - St. Peter and St. George

The origins of Bamberg Cathedral date back to the beginning of the 11th century, when the emperors Henry II and Cunegonde began to develop a very special bond with the city of Bamberg. Henry gave the Castrum Babenberg as heritage for the widow to his wife.
Since, however, both of them had to accept the fact that they couldn`t have children in their marriage, and the throne and the succession would thus remain unresolved, Henry decided to dissolve parts of the bishopric of Würzburg and Eichstätt and from these to found the independent diocese of Bamberg (1007), in which his ownership should pass. For this reason the Cathedral of Bamberg was built, which should to live through an eventful history in the following centuries. Weiterlesen »
