Altenburg Castle

One of the most beautiful sights of the city of Bamberg is Altenburg (the “Old Castle”), which is located high above Bamberg and dominates the cityscape with its round tower. It was first mentioned in 1109, in a document in which the Altenburg was given by Bishop Otto to the collegiate of St Jakob. This document also shows, that the castle "Altenburg cum silva et suis terminis", "Altenburg with its forest and its limitations", was part of the founding structure of an abbey.
