Villa Dessauer

Thanks to increasing tolerance and equality, the Jewish community of Bamberg could participate to the growing prosperity of the city. An example of this is represented by Jacob Dessauer's nephew Carl Dessauer, who made a fortune as a hop trader. From this he had the Villa Dessauer built in 1884, which from then on was regarded as the meeting place of the upscale Bamberg society.
Glamorous celebrations and balls were held here, to whom both Jews and Christians were invited. These festivals are an example of how the Jewish community was fully integrated into the Bamberg society at the end of the 19th century. Today, the representative neo-renaissance building serves as city art gallery.
